Daisy and Bess and Rose all had calves in the spring. The calves are learning to eat hay, so they only get a little milk to drink. Daisy’s calf and Bess’ calf are both bull calves, but Rose’s calf is a heifer — a girl-calf. Sarah has named her Pansy. Mother will raise Pansy to be a milk cow. In two or three years, if all goes well, little Pansy will have a calf of her own.
What will happen to the bull calves? Henry is training them to pull a little cart. When they get bigger, they will learn to pull heavy loads, and then they will be called oxen.
