Sarah Gets Busy

Sarah and Grandmother sleep in a featherbed in a corner of the hearth room.  When Sarah wakes up, Mother and Grandmother are already busy.  Mother is tending the baby, while Grandmother feeds the fire with sticks of wood.  “The fire needs to eat before we can,” she says.

Sarah fetches two buckets of water from the well.  The buckets are heavy and Sarah is glad that the well is close to the house.  She puts the buckets by the hearth.  Grandmother will use some of the water to cook breakfast with, while Sarah and Mother are milking the cows.
