...they tend to the milk from last night’s milking—they skim off the cream, and put it in the churn, and make butter. The butter will keep for months if it is washed and salted well. All summer they have been making butter and there is much more than the family needs.
Mother will sell the extra butter to people in town. Like the wheat, the butter is an important part of the farm. “Farming is everyone’s bread and butter,” says Grandmother, as she washes the butter.
