Even though it is chilly, the ducks and geese are warm in their feathers. Feathers help keep people comfortable, too. The featherbed that Grandmother and Sarah sleep on is much softer than the mattress of corn husks that Henry and Jonas share.
It takes a lot of feathers to make a featherbed. Mother saves feathers from the poultry, especially the soft down from the ducks and geese.
By the time Sarah is old enough to get married, there may be enough feathers to make a featherbed for her, too.
