Father and Jonas clean the barn while the horses and cattle are at the stream. They pitch the straw and manure into the pigpen, where it keeps the pigs happy and warm. In the spring, they will clean out the pigpen and take the mucky bedding to the fields where it can turn back into plants and dirt.
Father has a saying: “Today’s muck is tomorrow’s gold.” It sounds strange, but Henry knows what he means: the old bedding helps to grow the wheat that Father sells every year.
